Why outdoor plastic goes brittle
Polypropylene and polyethylene break down under ultraviolet light. The material chalks and loses impact strength, then cracks at handles, rims and screw points. It fails in the second summer, after your return window. The fix is a UV stabiliser dosed into the resin. It costs money per tonne, so it is the first thing cut when a factory is pushed to a target price.
What to put in writing
Specify the masterbatch dosage, the virgin to recycled resin ratio, and unit weight in grams. Weight is the one you can verify without a laboratory: a planter quoted at 780 grams that lands at 690 grams was thinned. Put it in the purchase order.
Powder coating versus paint
Where rust starts
Not on the flat panels. Rust starts at cut tube ends, weld points and the inside of open tubing. Adhesion is decided earlier, in pre treatment: degreasing, phosphating, rinsing. A factory that shortens pre treatment still hands you a perfect sample. The failure shows six months later.
What to ask for on steel
Powder coating is applied dry and cured in an oven, so the film is thicker and harder than wet paint. Wet paint is cheaper and looks identical on day one. Ask for film thickness in microns and the salt spray hours the coating is rated for.

Counting backwards from the shelf date
Garden retail in the northern hemisphere sells from March to July, and most of it clears in a six to eight week peak. Between the order and the shelf sit production time, the shutdown for Chinese New Year, freight and clearance. The order goes out in autumn or early winter. Ask for carton dimensions and pieces per carton with every quotation, then compare cost per delivered unit. Then push on packaging: nesting on planters and buckets, knock down flat packing on furniture, corner protectors instead of foam trays. Ask before the packaging is fixed, not after.
