Wholesale Home Textiles From China: 6 Buyer Checks

Wholesale home textiles from China

Wholesale home textiles from China is a category where the quotation does most of the lying. GSM, thread count and fibre percentage are cheap to print and slow to verify, so the cloth that arrives sits a grade under the cloth sold.

What wholesale home textiles from China actually covers

Several product groups sit under one heading and none share a machine. Bed linen comes from cut and sew plants, towels from terry weaving mills. Group a range by fabric, not by design. Our wholesale product categories page shows the clusters.

Fabric weight in GSM

GSM is grams per square metre, and on towels it is most of the specification. Usable bath towels run 400 to 700 GSM, and the figure is routinely overstated. Cut a swatch 10 by 10 centimetres, weigh it to 0.01 grams, multiply by 100, then repeat on the bulk at an acceptable quality limit sample size.

Thread count and what it hides

Thread count is warp plus weft per square inch, inflated by counting plies. A two ply yarn counted twice turns a real 300 into a marketed 600, which is how 1,000 count sheets exist at a 200 count price. Ask for the single ply count.

Cotton, polyester and what the sample shows

Cotton rich with no percentage means nothing: put the figure on the purchase order and the care label.

The burn test and its limit

Hold threads from the cut edge in a flame. Cotton burns steadily and leaves ash that crushes to dust. Polyester melts, smokes black and leaves a hard bead. A burn test names the fibres, not the percentages. Only a lab test does that, the raw material stage of a quality inspection.

Colour fastness, dye lots and shrinkage

Fastness uses two scales: 1 to 5 on the grey scale for washing and rubbing, 1 to 8 on blue wool for light. Specify grade 4 washing and dry rubbing, 3 to 4 wet, and 5 or better on blue wool for curtains.

Dye lots are the most common complaint

Shade variation between lots is the complaint we see most in wholesale home textiles from China. Dyeing is batch work: each vat is a lot, and two lots of one colour are never identical. Dye a colour in one lot, approve the lab dip before bulk dyeing, require a bulk swatch from the run, and put the lot number on the carton and the packing list.

Shrinkage after the first wash

Untreated woven cotton loses 3 to 7 percent on a first hot wash: a fitted sheet that no longer fits, a curtain an inch off the floor. Write the limit into the order, 3 percent maximum after three washes at 40 degrees, then check it on the sample.

Item Key spec Overstated as Sample check
Bath towels GSM Above price Weigh a 10 cm swatch
Bed sheets Single ply thread count Ply counted twice Ask the yarn count
Curtains Light fastness Fade resistant claims Blue wool grade
Cushion covers Flammability Report for another fabric Rub with white cloth

Flammability rules in the UK and EU

Whether a fire test applies depends on what the fabric becomes. In the UK the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 cover upholstered furniture, loose covers, seat pads and scatter cushions, with cigarette and match tests on the cover. Domestic curtains and bed linen sit outside them. The EU has no single harmonised rule, though upholstery is tested to EN 1021 and contract curtains to EN 13773.

Volume, not weight, sets the freight bill

Wholesale home textiles from China rarely reach a weight limit. Sea LCL is charged on the greater of one cubic metre or one tonne, and air freight converts size to weight with a divisor, commonly 6,000, so a 60 by 40 by 50 centimetre carton bills at 20 kilos.

Cutting the cube

Compression packing on filled goods can halve the cube. Curtains roll rather than fold. Size the carton to divide into the container floor, so you are not paying cargo rates on air. Goods from every mill reach our Yiwu warehouse to be combined before shipping from China.

The layer we keep on wholesale home textiles from China

What we do not hand over is shade control in the dyehouse. You can learn what it checks: the approved lab dip, the bulk swatch off the run, a light box set to daylight and store light. What you cannot do from a desk abroad is stand at the mill as the first lot comes off, hold the dried bulk against your dip, and tell the production manager in Mandarin that the lot is re dyed at his cost. That is what a Yiwu sourcing agent is for.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for wholesale home textiles from China?
Bulk and wholesale only, with a US$5,000 minimum order value, spread across sizes, colours and several mills.

Can I get the same shade on a reorder?
Only if you plan for it. Keep a retained swatch and the lot number, and require the reorder to match it.

Do I need a flammability test report?
It depends on the item. Cushions, seat pads and upholstery covers sold in the UK need one. Domestic curtains and bed linen generally do not.

Pioneer Group is a China sourcing agent based in Yiwu, China, helping wholesale and bulk buyers source, inspect and consolidate orders before handover to the buyer’s freight agent.

How Pioneer Group can help

A textile order is decided at the dyeing stage, weeks before anything is sewn. An agent in Yiwu approves the dip, pulls swatches off the running line, and combines several mills into one compressed shipment.

  • Sourcing. Access to 5,000+ factories, with quotes and samples gathered and compared before you commit.
  • Quality inspection. Three stages, raw material, in production, and pre-shipment, with photo and video reports on every batch.
  • Consolidation and freight-agent handover. Orders from multiple suppliers are received at our Yiwu warehouse, consolidated, and handed to the buyer’s nominated freight agent.

Commission is 3 to 5 percent depending on volume and it is negotiable, paid by you and never by the factory, so the price you see is the factory price.
