Most importers find one way to buy from China and stay there for years. That is usually a mistake. There are five main China sourcing channels, and each one is good at something the others handle badly. Alibaba is easy but often puts a trader between you and the factory. 1688 is cheaper and Mandarin only. Trade fairs are fast but seasonal. Wholesale markets run all year. A sourcing agent is a person, not a platform. Here is an honest comparison, including when you need no help at all.
The honest answer: no single channel wins
Buyers usually ask which platform is best. The better question is which channel fits this order. A 200 piece test run and a mixed 40 foot container are different problems. Price, minimum order quantity, language, payment method and shipping support all change depending on where you buy. Experienced importers do not pick one channel and defend it. They move between China sourcing channels as the order changes.
The five China sourcing channels compared
- Alibaba. The easiest place to start. English interface, supplier profiles, protected payment options, and you can message dozens of sellers in an afternoon. The trade off is that many listings belong to trading companies rather than factories, so you often pay a markup you never see. That is not automatically bad. Traders accept smaller quantities and handle export paperwork a factory would refuse.
- 1688. The domestic Chinese wholesale platform. Prices are frequently lower than the export facing equivalent because it is built for Chinese buyers. The limits are real: Mandarin only, payment in RMB through Chinese methods, and sellers who ship to a warehouse in the next province but not to your country. You need someone in China to buy, receive, consolidate and export.
- Trade fairs. A trade fair such as the Canton Fair puts hundreds of suppliers in one hall. You touch samples, meet sales staff and compare quality in hours instead of weeks. The limit is the calendar. Fairs run for a set number of days, so a decision that falls outside those weeks waits or moves to another channel.
- Permanent wholesale markets. Yiwu is the clearest example. The Yiwu International Trade City has 5 main districts and 75,000+ booths, open year round, and it suits mixed loads: a few cartons of one item, a few of another, shipped together. Our guide to the Yiwu market explains the districts.
- A sourcing agent. Not a platform. A person who quotes, negotiates, inspects, consolidates and ships on your behalf for a percentage. Pioneer Group charges 3 to 5 percent depending on order quantity, with no hidden markup on the goods.
Matching the channel to your order size and product
One simple product, moderate quantity, and time to vet suppliers yourself? Doing it directly on Alibaba is genuinely fine. Plenty of importers run good businesses that way and never use an agent. The channel strains when you need many different products in one shipment, when the domestic price gap on 1688 is wide enough to matter, or when your buyer will not accept goods nobody physically checked.
Mixed orders push you toward markets. That is why Yiwu exists: a buyer can fill one container from thirty booths. Larger single item orders push you toward factories, which usually means fairs or an agent making introductions. Bulk buyers combine China sourcing channels on the same shipment, quoting a factory directly while market booths cover the smaller lines. Our Yiwu market guide and the product category list show what is realistic in one trip.
Where China sourcing channels need a person on the ground
A blog can compare China sourcing channels fairly. It cannot tell you the right channel strategy for your exact product at your exact volume, because that answer depends on current factory prices, who actually manufactures the item, and which booths hold real stock this month. That is the work: speaking Mandarin at the booth, paying in RMB on 1688, checking goods before they load, consolidating everything into one shipment. Pioneer Group does that from an office in Yiwu with access to 5,000+ factories, from a US$5,000 minimum order value. Send your product list to our Yiwu sourcing agent team and you will have a reply within 2 hours during business hours, China time.
Frequently asked questions
Is 1688 always cheaper than Alibaba?
Often, but the gap narrows once you add an intermediary, domestic freight and export handling. Pioneer Group quotes both so you compare the real landed number, not the screen price.
Do I need a sourcing agent, or can I just use Alibaba?
If you are buying one simple product and can vet the supplier yourself, Alibaba alone works. Agents earn their fee on mixed orders, factory direct pricing and inspection.
Can one supplier be found on several channels?
Yes. The same company may hold a Yiwu booth, list on 1688 and exhibit at fairs, sometimes at different prices. Pioneer Group checks across channels before quoting.
