Canton Fair MOQ: 6 Things That Set the Minimum

Canton Fair MOQ questions come up in the first minute at a booth. You ask the price, they ask the quantity, and the number is higher than you planned. It is the arithmetic of a production run, not a negotiating position. This article explains what sets it and what to do when you fall below it.

The honest answer about the Canton Fair MOQ

Minimums at an exhibition are higher than at a permanent wholesale market, and the reason is who stands in the booth. The 140th session runs 15 October to 4 November 2026 in Pazhou, Guangzhou, in three phases of five days each, as our Canton Fair 2026 dates guide sets out.

Exhibitors are manufacturers, not stockists

Over 30,000 enterprises exhibit at this trade fair, and most of them make goods rather than stock them. A stockist sells what is already made and can break a case. A manufacturer sells a slot on a line.

Booth stock versus production run

At a market booth the goods sit in the warehouse behind it, so the minimum is a carton or two, as our post on Yiwu market MOQ by category sets out. At a fair the goods on display are samples, and a Canton Fair MOQ is the smallest run a factory can make without losing money on setup.

6 things that set the Canton Fair MOQ

Break the minimum down and six costs appear, each paid once per run.

  1. Materials. Fabric, resin and steel arrive in mill quantities. A tenth of a roll does not cost a tenth.
  2. Machine setup. Stopping a line, fitting the tool and running test pieces costs hours, whatever the run size.
  3. Tooling. Moulds and dies are cut for one shape and paid for once.
  4. Printing plates. Each colour in a logo needs its own plate, cut for your artwork alone.
  5. Dye lots. Dyeing happens in fixed bath sizes, and a half empty bath costs the same.
  6. The production slot. A short run holds the line as long as a big one: see production lead times in China.

How customisation raises the number

Customisation makes every cost above worse. A catalogue product uses a material, a setup and a colour that already exist. Your logo, colour, box and shape each add a fixed cost that only your order pays for, and the units carrying it are the minimum.

Mixed colours and sizes inside one run

The minimum is rarely a total. In most factories it applies per colour and per size, because each variant is its own dye lot or setup, so three colours at the stated minimum can mean three times the quantity. Some exhibitors allow an assortment when the variants share material and tooling. Many will not.

How your specification moves the minimum

The same product carries different minimums depending on how much of it is yours.

What you ask for What the factory commits Effect on the minimum
Catalogue item, stock colour Existing material and setup Lowest number quoted
Your own colour A dye lot Rises to the lot size
Your logo on the goods A plate per colour Rises per print position
Your own shape A mould for your part Highest, tooling is paid once
Your printed box A carton print run Rises to the printer minimum

What an exhibitor means by negotiable

Negotiable rarely means the minimum can fall. It means the unit price moves if the quantity rises, or the minimum can be met by combining items that share a material or a machine. Treat a Canton Fair MOQ as a cost structure, not an opening bid.

When your quantity is below their line

Three honest options remain. Combine products, so items from one factory add up to a run they accept. Accept stock, meaning their standard colour and box. Or buy that line elsewhere, because finished goods sit by the carton in the Yiwu International Trade City and its 75,000 plus booths.

Where this needs a person on the ground

Everything above can be checked with three exhibitors in an afternoon. One thing is missing on purpose: how a factory comes down below its published minimum.

That happens, and not by asking twice. It runs on the relationship and on having something to offer in return: a repeat commitment, or a slot in a run already booked. Someone who has paid that factory before is trading facts. A first meeting at a booth is a request for a favour.

We attend the fair as visitors, not exhibitors, and the work with the factory carries on from Yiwu after the halls close. When your quantity falls short of a Canton Fair MOQ, the first move is to change the product mix. Our wholesale product categories page lists what we source.

Frequently asked questions

Is the minimum the same in every phase?
No. Phase 1, 15 to 19 October, is advanced manufacturing, where tooling and materials push minimums up. Phase 2, 23 to 27 October, is home living. Phase 3, 31 October to 4 November, covers clothing, shoes, bags and toys, where dye lots and size ranges set the number.

Why is a Canton Fair MOQ higher than a market minimum?
Because you are buying production, not stock. A market seller owns the goods and sells cartons. A factory buys material, sets a machine and holds a slot before a unit exists.

Do I need an invitation letter and a badge?
Buyer badges and the invitation letter are free, and pre-registration is open year round through the official Buyer Service System. Check the official Canton Fair site for current rules. Pioneer Group attends as a visitor and does not exhibit, so ask us before assuming anything on the Guangzhou side.
