How the bag category behaves

Ask how the sample was built: on the real die, from the real roll, with real hardware, or on the showroom bench. Seal it and date it.
Materials in wholesale handbags from China
PU grades differ more than the name suggests
PU is a coating on backing cloth, not a material. Thickness and resin quality decide its life. Low grade PU cracks along fold lines and peels at the handle join inside a year, faster in heat and humidity. Specify thickness in millimetres, a flex test and a rub test.
Genuine leather and canvas
Genuine leather often means split leather with a printed finish, not full grain. Ask which layer of the hide. Canvas needs a GSM figure and colour fastness, because dark untreated cotton rubs onto light clothing.

Hardware fails before the body does
On returned goods the body is intact. The zip has split, the clasp no longer closes, or a rivet has pulled through. Hardware is most of the complaint rate in wholesale handbags from China.
Zips fail first
Name the zip on the purchase order: brand or grade, tooth material and size, die cast or moulded slider. Nylon coil suits a lining pocket, not a main opening under load. A branded zip quoted and a generic zip fitted is the commonest substitution here.
Rivets, clasps and strap anchors
Strap anchors carry the load. Ask for a pull test on handle and strap joins at the rated weight, on production units not the sample. Rivets need a washer or reinforcement patch behind them, never a single layer of coated PU. Our quality inspection page covers timing.
Stitching and lining
Stitch density and the stress points
Stitch density belongs in the specification, as stitches per inch. Too loose and the seam gapes under load. Too tight on thin PU and the needle perforates the coating, so the material tears along the stitch. Handle joins and base seams need bar tacks.
Lining tears before the outer does
Lining is the first thing trimmed to hit a price. Thin unbacked polyester tears at pocket corners and along the base, and once it tears the bag is finished while the outside looks new. Specify lining weight, backing and seam allowance.
Counterfeit and trade dress risk
Customs seize bags, and this is the highest intellectual property risk in consumer goods. Trade dress covers shape, pattern, colour combination and hardware form, so a bag can infringe carrying no brand name. Reference photos sent to a factory come back closer to the original than you intended. Check artwork and hardware shape before the mould is cut, keep an indemnity clause, and run due diligence on design claims. Wheel and handle testing on luggage
Wheels are tested by distance, not by spin. The case is loaded to its rated weight and run over a hard surface for several kilometres, then checked for flat spots, bearing play and cracked housings.
Telescopic handles are tested by cycles: extend and retract under load several thousand times, then check for wobble and a tube that will not lock. Ask for tube wall thickness. Sample to an acceptable quality limit.

One layer does not transfer through an article: the visit on the day. Standing at the cutting table while your roll is cut, confirming the coating is the grade on the order, checking the hardware box for the zip brand quoted, and arguing it in Mandarin two hours out of Yiwu.
