Canton Fair Prices: 6 Rules for Talking Numbers

Pioneer Group team with a client at a trade fair in China

Canton Fair prices are quoted fast, in a noisy hall, to a buyer nobody has met. That number is an export list price built for strangers, not the price the factory will ship at. This article covers what moves a quote, what to ask when it will not, and the one thing it leaves out.

What Canton Fair prices really represent

A price at a trade fair is an opening position for an unknown audience. An exhibitor quotes buyer after buyer across a five day phase and does not know which will order, so the number carries margin.

The quote rests on four assumptions

Most export quotes assume standard specification, standard export packing, a standard deposit and balance, and a mid range quantity. Change an assumption and the cost behind the number changes. Argue with the number alone and nothing moves.

An exhibition stand is not a market booth

In the Yiwu International Trade City you can walk away and come back tomorrow, and the seller is often the owner. Those rules are in 6 rules for negotiating in the Yiwu market. A fair is different. The dates are fixed: the 140th session runs 15 October to 4 November 2026 in three phases of five days each. The staff are usually sales people, not owners. There is no return visit: your phase ends and the hall closes.

Six rules for talking numbers at the stand

Canton Fair prices move on a small set of inputs. These rules keep the conversation on them.

  1. Ask for the structure, not the number. Ask what the quote assumes: quantity, specification, packing, payment terms and the Incoterm. A price without those five compares to nothing.
  2. Move volume, specification and terms. A larger quantity, a simpler specification, a later delivery month or a bigger deposit change the cost behind the price. Theatrics do not.
  3. Accept that the stand may not hold the discount. Many stands are staffed by sales teams working to a price list set at the factory. Ask who approves pricing and request a revised quote by email.
  4. Ask for value when the number is fixed. Better packing, sample cost credited to the order, tooling included, longer payment terms. Each costs the factory less than a price cut.
  5. Collect three comparable quotes first. Comparable means the same specification, quantity, packing and terms. Three show where the middle sits. One shows nothing.
  6. Leave with it in writing. Company, product code, specification, quantity break, packing, terms, Incoterm and validity date. That file is the subject of what to do after the fair.

How to make your quantity credible

Quantity moves a price only when the exhibitor believes it. Give a product code, a quantity, a delivery month and a destination port. A vague promise of large orders reads as no order.

Why three quotes come before any pushing

Your phase lasts five days, and the halls close to buyers on the changeover days, 20 to 22 October and 28 to 30 October. Walk the category first, taking quotes without negotiating. Push on the second visit, when you can show a number is high. Our phase guide shows where your products sit.

What to ask for instead of a lower number

When Canton Fair prices will not move, the value sits in what is attached to the number. A lower unit price with worse packing or terms can cost more delivered, as we show in landed cost from China.

What you ask for What it is worth Why a stand can agree
Stronger export packing Fewer damaged cartons A separate cost line, not the unit price
Sample cost credited to the order Recovers sample and courier spend Applies only if you order
Tooling or mould cost included Removes a one off charge Recovered across the production run
Longer payment terms Frees working capital until arrival A finance decision, not a price cut

Packing, tooling and samples

These are easiest to win because they are one off costs, not permanent damage to a price list. A factory that refuses two cents on a unit will often carry the tooling instead.

Payment terms are part of the price

Thirty extra days of credit is worth real money and never shows up in a price comparison. Ask for the deposit percentage and the balance trigger in writing.

Where this needs a person on the ground

This article does not tell you the floor price for your category this season. That gap is deliberate. A discount is not a good price: a large cut off a number that opened high is still expensive. Canton Fair prices are good or bad only against current local reference pricing.

That reference is what the same specification costs this month from factories that are not in the hall. It moves with material cost and season, so nobody can publish it honestly. Checking Canton Fair prices against live local quotes is work for someone buying in the category now, which is what our Yiwu sourcing agent service does. We attend the fair as visitors and have no stand there, so ask us about the Guangzhou side rather than assuming it is arranged.

Frequently asked questions

Are Canton Fair prices negotiable at the stand?
Usually, but through volume, specification, packing and payment terms, not a plain discount. Many exhibitors need factory approval first, so expect the real figure by email after the fair.

Should I place an order during the fair?
Rarely on the first day. Collect three comparable quotes, check the supplier, then order once the numbers sit side by side. Pioneer Group can verify a factory before you pay a balance.

Where do I check session details and buyer registration?
Use the official Canton Fair website and its Buyer Service System. Badges and the invitation letter are free, and pre-registration is open year round. Details change between sessions, so confirm there.

How Pioneer Group can help

We check a fair quote against what the same specification costs from factories around Yiwu, then run the order: samples, inspection, consolidation and shipping.
