A buyer works one phase of the Canton Fair in Guangzhou, then finds the halls shut for three days while the next phase is built. Planning the Canton Fair to Yiwu leg of the same trip turns that dead time into buying time. Here is what that window realistically allows.
The honest answer: an event closes, a market does not
The 140th session runs from 15 October to 4 November 2026 in three five-day phases, and the halls close between them. The official term for those gaps is the changeover period, rendered in the fair’s own English as time for booth dismantling and setup. Not rest days. Construction days. Confirm every date on the official Canton Fair website.
Why the changeover days exist
Phase 1 ends on 19 October and Phase 2 opens on 23 October. On 20, 21 and 22 October one set of exhibitors tears down and another builds, and the same happens on 28, 29 and 30 October. A buyer covering two phases flies home or waits. See our comparison of Yiwu market versus the Canton Fair, and background on trade fairs.
What Yiwu International Trade City is
Yiwu International Trade City is a permanent wholesale market with five main districts and more than 75,000 booths. It is not an event with phases, so nothing is dismantled and rebuilt. That is why the changeover days are usable.
6 things to plan for a Canton Fair to Yiwu trip
Treat the break as a short, separate buying trip.
- Decide before you fly. Work out which phase carries your category, then build the Yiwu leg around the changeover days that follow it.
- Check travel yourself. Do not assume the journey is quick or that seats are free around fair dates. Check routes, timetables and fares with the carrier, not against a number in a blog post.
- Build a booth record system. One photo of the product, one of the price card, one of the booth number sign, every time. A card with no photograph is worthless later.
- Carry specifications, not just interest. Material, size, packing, carton dimensions, quantity, target landed price. Traders quote fast against a clear spec, slowly against a vague one.
- Set a sample plan. Decide who receives samples and where. You cannot carry twenty booths of samples through an airport.
- Know your own minimums. Booths quote per carton, and the workable order is mixed across many booths, not a full container from one stall.
How many days a first Yiwu visit needs
Three working days to be useful, five to be comfortable. Day one is orientation, because the scale is disorienting and most of it is walking. Day two revisits the booths that matter with your specifications open. Day three is negotiation and samples. A returning buyer with a booth list works in a day.
What to carry out of Guangzhou
Photographs are the currency of a Canton Fair to Yiwu trip. A fair booth prices in the stand, the rental and the sales team standing in it. You cannot test that item against wholesale pricing without an image, a specification and the price you were quoted.
What fits inside each Canton Fair to Yiwu break window
The windows are fixed, short and unequal. Read your own phase across this table.
| Canton Fair phase | Phase dates in 2026 | Changeover days that follow | Working Yiwu time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phase 1, Advanced Manufacturing | 15 to 19 October | 20, 21 and 22 October | About two days once travel is deducted |
| Phase 2, Quality Home Living | 23 to 27 October | 28, 29 and 30 October | About two days once travel is deducted |
| Phase 3, Better Life | 31 October to 4 November | None, the session ends | As long as you extend your stay |
Reading the table against your category
Because Phase 1 closes on 19 October and Phase 3 opens on 31 October, no trip shorter than three weeks covers all three phases. Ask which phase carries your category instead of planning to attend the fair in general. Phase 3 buyers get the easiest Canton Fair to Yiwu run, because nothing is built afterwards. Our Yiwu market map guide sets out which district holds what.
How samples and mixed orders move
At a fair you leave with a catalogue. In Yiwu you buy from twelve booths across four districts, each handing you a carton and invoicing separately. That is not a container. It becomes one when a single address receives every carton, checks it, repacks it and loads it. Our notes on product samples from China and on turning many booths into one container cover the mechanics.
Where a Canton Fair to Yiwu trip needs a person on the ground
Everything above you can do from a hotel room with a notebook. The layer this article does not teach is not knowledge. It is execution inside the Yiwu market.
Matching a folder of fair photographs to real booth numbers across five districts is field work. Someone has to walk the aisles, find the traders who carry what you photographed, and hand you a shortlist instead of a district name. Someone has to collect you from the airport in Yiwu, hold a warehouse address that thirty booths can deliver to, and turn that pile into one shipment on one set of documents. Pioneer Group attends the Canton Fair, so the Guangzhou end is not abstract to us. What we run end to end is the Yiwu side: sourcing, airport pickup in Yiwu, a warehouse receiving from many booths, quality inspection in three stages with photo and video reports, consolidation and shipping. If you want something arranged around the fair itself, ask us and we will tell you plainly what we can do. Bulk and wholesale only, US$5,000 minimum order value, 3 to 5 percent commission by order quantity with no hidden markup, replies within 2 hours during China business hours. Frequently asked questions
Is Yiwu market open during the Canton Fair changeover days?
Yes. It is a permanent market rather than an event, so it trades normally while the fair halls are closed for dismantling and setup. Confirm opening times around national holidays.
How do I get from Guangzhou to Yiwu?
Check current routes, timetables and fares with carriers when you book. Capacity tightens around fair dates, so treat the travel day as part of the three day window.
Is one Canton Fair to Yiwu trip enough to place an order?
Often yes, if you arrive with written specifications and leave with samples and booth records. Pioneer Group works to a US$5,000 minimum order value, so a mixed order across booths is a normal first purchase.
